Awaiting the New Body

5 For we know that if the earthlys tentt we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. 2Meanwhile we groan,u longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling,v 3because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. 4For while we are in this tent, we groanw and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling,x so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.y

6Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. 7For we live by faith, not by sight.z 8We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.a 9So we make it our goal to please him,b whether we are at home in the body or away from it.

2 Corinthians 5:1–9 — English Standard Version (ESV)

1For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, 3if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. 4For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

6So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, 7for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.

2 Corinthians 5:1–9 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

1For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: 3If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. 4For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. 5Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. 6Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 7(For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 8We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

9Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.

2 Corinthians 5:1–9 — New Living Translation (NLT)

1For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands. 2We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long to put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing. 3For we will put on heavenly bodies; we will not be spirits without bodies. 4While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it’s not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life. 5God himself has prepared us for this, and as a guarantee he has given us his Holy Spirit.

6So we are always confident, even though we know that as long as we live in these bodies we are not at home with the Lord. 7For we live by believing and not by seeing. 8Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord. 9So whether we are here in this body or away from this body, our goal is to please him.

2 Corinthians 5:1–9 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

1For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, 3if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. 4For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. 5Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

6So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. 7For we walk by faith, not by sight. 8We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.

9Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him.

2 Corinthians 5:1–9 — New Century Version (NCV)

1We know that our body—the tent we live in here on earth—will be destroyed. But when that happens, God will have a house for us. It will not be a house made by human hands; instead, it will be a home in heaven that will last forever. 2But now we groan in this tent. We want God to give us our heavenly home, 3because it will clothe us so we will not be naked. 4While we live in this body, we have burdens, and we groan. We do not want to be naked, but we want to be clothed with our heavenly home. Then this body that dies will be fully covered with life. 5This is what God made us for, and he has given us the Spirit to be a guarantee for this new life.

6So we always have courage. We know that while we live in this body, we are away from the Lord. 7We live by what we believe, not by what we can see. 8So I say that we have courage. We really want to be away from this body and be at home with the Lord. 9Our only goal is to please God whether we live here or there,

2 Corinthians 5:1–9 — American Standard Version (ASV)

1For we know that if the earthly house of our tabernacle be dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens. 2For verily in this we groan, longing to be clothed upon with our habitation which is from heaven: 3if so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. 4For indeed we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened; not for that we would be unclothed, but that we would be clothed upon, that what is mortal may be swallowed up of life. 5Now he that wrought us for this very thing is God, who gave unto us the earnest of the Spirit. 6Being therefore always of good courage, and knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord 7(for we walk by faith, not by sight); 8we are of good courage, I say, and are willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be at home with the Lord. 9Wherefore also we make it our aim, whether at home or absent, to be well-pleasing unto him.

2 Corinthians 5:1–9 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

1For we know that if our earthly tabernacle house be destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2For indeed in this we groan, ardently desiring to have put on our house which is from heaven; 3if indeed being also clothed we shall not be found naked. 4For indeed we who are in the tabernacle groan, being burdened; while yet we do not wish to be unclothed, but clothed, that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5Now he that has wrought us for this very thing is God, who also has given to us the earnest of the Spirit. 6Therefore we are always confident, and know that while present in the body we are absent from the Lord, 7(for we walk by faith, not by sight;) 8we are confident, I say, and pleased rather to be absent from the body and present with the Lord. 9Wherefore also we are zealous, whether present or absent, to be agreeable to him.

2 Corinthians 5:1–9 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

1We know that if the life we live here on earth is ever taken down like a tent, we still have a building from God. It is an eternal house in heaven that isn’t made by human hands. 2In our present tent-like existence we sigh, since we long to put on the house we will have in heaven. 3After we have put it on,we won’t be naked. 4While we are in this tent, we sigh. We feel distressed because we don’t want to take off the tent, but we do want to put on the eternal house. Then ⸤eternal⸥ life will put an end to our mortal existence. 5God has prepared us for this and has given us his Spirit to guarantee it.

6So we are always confident. We know that as long as we are living in these bodies, we are living away from the Lord. 7Indeed, our lives are guided by faith, not by sight. 8We are confident and prefer to live away from this body and to live with the Lord. 9Whether we live in the body or move out of it, our goal is to be pleasing to him.

2 Corinthians 5:1–9 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

1For we know that if our temporary, earthly dwelling is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal dwelling in the heavens, not made with hands. 2Indeed, we groan in this body, desiring to put on our dwelling from heaven, 3since, when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. 4Indeed, we groan while we are in this tent, burdened as we are, because we do not want to be unclothed but clothed, so that mortality may be swallowed up by life. 5And the One who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave us the Spirit as a down payment.

6So, we are always confident and know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. 7For we walk by faith, not by sight, 8and we are confident and satisfied to be out of the body and at home with the Lord. 9Therefore, whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to be pleasing to Him.

2 Corinthians 5:1–9 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

1For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2For in this tent we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling— 3if indeed, when we have taken it off we will not be found naked. 4For while we are still in this tent, we groan under our burden, because we wish not to be unclothed but to be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

6So we are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord— 7for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.

2 Corinthians 5:1–9 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

1For we know that if our earthly house, the tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made by hands, eternal in the heavens. 2For indeed, in this house we groan, because we desire to put on our dwelling from heaven, 3if indeed, even after we have taken it off, we will not be found naked. 4For indeed we who are in this tent groan, being burdened for this reason, that we do not want to be unclothed, but to be clothed, in order that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5Now the one who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the down payment, the Spirit.

6Therefore, although we are always confident and know that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord—7for we live by faith, not by sight—8so we are confident and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. 9Therefore indeed we have as our ambition, whether at home in the body or absent from the body, to be acceptable to him.

2 Corinthians 5:1–9 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

1We know that the earthly tent we live in will be destroyed. But we have a building made by God. It is a house in heaven that lasts forever. Human hands did not build it.

2During our time on earth we groan. We long to put on our house in heaven as if it were clothing. 3Then we will not be naked.

4While we live in this tent of ours, we groan under our heavy load. We don’t want to be naked. We want to be dressed with our house in heaven. What must die will be swallowed up by life.

5God has made us for that very purpose. He has given us the Holy Spirit as a down payment. The Spirit makes us sure of what is still to come.

6So here is what we can always be certain about. As long as we are at home in our bodies, we are away from the Lord. 7We live by believing, not by seeing. 8We are certain about that. We would rather be away from our bodies and at home with the Lord. 9So we try our best to please him. We want to please him whether we are at home in our bodies or away from them.

2 Corinthians 5:1–9 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

1For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

2For indeed in this house we groan, longing to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven,

3inasmuch as we, having put it on, will not be found naked.

4For indeed while we are in this tent, we groan, being burdened, because we do not want to be unclothed but to be clothed, so that what is mortal will be swallowed up by life.

5Now He who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave to us the Spirit as a pledge.

6Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord

7for we walk by faith, not by sight

8we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord.

9Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him.
