How Can Journaling Help You In Your Self-Discovery Journey?

If you’ve never journaled in your entire life, you might be skeptical about this mindful practice.

The keyword, here, is ‘mindful’.

Think about it – how much of your days you spend on autopilot? I’m sure it’s most of it…

You probably wake up, have breakfast, get dressed and, in less than one hour. you’re already out of the door – “ready” to deal with the world.

How much time do you allow yourself to rest? I mean, real rest – not mindlessly scrolling on your phone or drinking your problems away with your friends.

Let me guess – you also spend most of your days complaining about life, right? I mean, you have everything you could ask for: a roof over your head, food in the fridge, clothes to wear – yet something is missing.

You feel unsatisfied and unhappy with your life, yet you don’t know exactly why.

Well, how do you think you can improve and change your life if you’ve never asked yourself the right questions?

How do you expect to be happy if you’ve never taken the time to think about what makes you feel good?

And finally, how do you plan on achieving your goals if you’ve never reflected on what you want out of life in the first place?

Mindful practices, such as journaling, have the power to let you reconnect with your inner self.

When you intentionally set some time aside, to sit with yourself, your thoughts, and emotions – you’ll discover new parts of yourself that you didn’t even know were there in the first place.

To start your journey towards self-discovery you don’t have to do much – just grab a pen and paper, and get ready to answer the following journal prompts!

How Journaling Changed My Life

If even science didn’t convince you enough to give journaling a try, I’m about to change your mind 😉

We’re about to get intimate here: I’m going to share with you the story of how journaling changed my life.

Always passionate about personal growth, I started my journaling practice back in 2015.

Honestly, I’ve always been a writer.

Before journaling for self-discovery, I created stories about my favorite artists (also known as fan fiction…Hey – I had warned you that we were about to get honest ;))

Writing about fictional characters was one thing; writing to get to know myself was another…

Soon, I realized that journaling was so powerful because it allowed me to distance myself from whatever I was going through and gain a better perspective on the matter (hence, make better decisions).

Whenever feeling overwhelmed, I turned to journaling as a healthy coping mechanism.

It helped me navigate the hardest moments of my life, but also create timeless memories of everything good that also happened.

Journaling allowed me to ask myself the right questions and to jot down ideas for what the answers could have been (without pressure). Why? Because it’s for me, and me only.

It’s my private, intimate space where I can be 100% honest and know that no one will judge me for it.

So yeah, journaling changed my life in many ways! To name a few, it allowed me to:

  • Gain more clarity on what my dream life looks like to me
  • Make wiser decisions
  • Build my self-esteem
  • Get clear on my goals
  • Identify my limiting beliefs
  • Process negative events
  • Be more grateful for the good things in life

Since I hate gate-keeping things that can change your life for the better, I want to share with you the 50 impactful journal prompts that helped me the most in my self-discovery journey!

Best Tips to Get You Unstuck

If you’re new to journaling, you might be wondering where to start.

As I mentioned above, self-discovery is an ongoing process.

It might feel uncomfortable, at first, to sit down with your thoughts.

Being uncomfortable, though, is an essential part of getting to know yourself more. So yeah, you’ve just got to embrace discomfort!

Here are some of the best tips for journaling when you’re just starting your self-discovery journey:

Set the Tone for Your Journaling Session

Ideally, you’ll want to find a quiet place, where you know you’ll be unbothered for a long time. If you want to take it to the next level, you could make it cozier by:

  • Lighting a candle
  • Playing some music
  • Tucking yourself into a blanket
  • Sipping on a drink

For some, the best way to get inspired is to stay in touch with nature. If that’s the case, don’t be afraid to take your journaling session outside and enjoy some fresh air!

Let Go of Expectations

When you’re new to journaling, it’s so easy to get caught up in small details.

You have to let go of the idea of wanting everything to be perfect!

Embrace the fact that you’ll make mistakes. Not all pages will look pretty and aesthetic. Sometimes you’ll try hard to look for the right words, but the right words simply won’t come out.

That’s okay. It’s your journal. It’s your practice.

No one is going to read what you write. No one has expectations, but you. And it’s time to let go of them – so that you can finally unleash your true self!

Plan Your Journaling Sessions

If it’s not scheduled, then it won’t happen…(we’re all guilty of this!)

That’s why, if you really want to adopt the journaling habit, you need to be honest with yourself and assess how often you can do it and how much time you can spend on it.

Whether you decide to journal every day in the morning, at night, or only on the weekends – it’s fundamental that you set aside some time for it!

Seriously: I want you to write down when your next journaling session will happen. That’s one way to keep yourself more accountable 😉

Use Journal Prompts

Finally, if you’re struggling to pour your heart out and need some inspiration – I’ve got what’s right for you!
