During a special meeting on Tuesday, the Jonesboro Board of Works approved an $18,500 bid to demolish a downtown building. Mayor Terry Poling said the city acquired 400 S. Main St. with a batch of other properties after a commis- sioner's sale about three years ago. He said the city was unable to find a buyer for the building and it was unfit for habitation.

"It's pretty well gone," he said. "There's no saving it." The building is just south of Ride and Leather, 320 S. Main and north of city hall. The last occupant was Decker Construction Company. Tom Miller Trucking and Excavating was awarded the bid, which was the lowest out of four different bids.

Tom Miller was the only contractor present at the meeting. Board member Bob Mcnu*tt asked whether the city had a plan to pay for the demolition. Poling said the Grant County Area Plan Commission was providing $3,000 and the city would pay the rest out of its rainy day fund. Poling said he had "no idea" why the city acquired a structure it would have to pay to demolish. After the demolition, he said the city would try to sell the empty lot.

The board unanimously approved the bid. Miller said his company could start soon, but would need the city to provide paperwork that the building has no asbestos.
