Goswick, Mattie – 19 Jun 1942 – Optic, dated 26 Jun 1942
Funeral services for Mrs. Mattie Goswick were held Sunday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R.M. Irvin of Daingerfield, where she died Friday night at 10:30 o’clock. She would have been 85 years old June 25. Rev. A.E. Bradbury and Rev. S.M. Williams of Mt. Vernon conducted services. Burial was in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Mrs. Goswick was born near Daingerfield June 25, 1857. Surviving, are her daughter, Mrs. Irvin, and a grandson, Rev. Richard Irvin, pastor of the White Rock Methodist Church, Dallas, seven step-children, Mrs. Eva Rountree and A.J. Goswick of Mt. Vernon, M.S. Goswick of Saltillo, F.G. and O.Y. Goswick of Dallas, Eugene Goswick of Plainville, Ga., and S.J. Goswick of Birmingham, Ala. [contributed by Bob Westphal]

Goswick, R. J. – 23 Mar 1937 – Optic, dated 26 mar 1937 & 2 Apr 1937
R. J. Goswick, who lived here many years, died of double pneumonia at his home in Plainville, GA., Tuesday morning at 5:00 o’clock. Mrs. Eva Rountree left Monday when the message came that her brother was dying. Oliver and Cyrus Goswick of Dallas and M.S. (Mose) Goswick of Saltillo left Tuesday night. Funeral services were held at Plainville Thursday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock. Deceased is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters. Hosts of friends of Mr. Goswick and the Goswick family were deeply grieved at his death. Mr. Goswick was born on Feb. 8, 1883 at Plainville, GA., and died in the same house in which he was born. He was married to Vada Scott on Jan. 2, 1908. Ruper as he was affectionately known was universally esteemed and his friends were numbered (?) by his acquaintances. [contributed by Bob Westphal]

Goswick, Tom – 8 Dec 1927 – Optic dated 16 Dec 1927
Tom Goswick died at his home in Denison at 9:30 o’clock last Thursday morning after a long illness and his body brought to Mt. Vernon for interment Friday afternoon. Accompanying the body and in attendance at the funeral were his wife and baby of Galveston, his sister Mrs. Eva Rountree of Arlington, and his brothers Lawrence of Mineral Wells, Mose of Mexia, Oliver of Dallas, Farris of Dallas; brothers of a distance who could not be present were J.R. of Birming-ham, Ala., and Ruper of Plainville, Ga. He was also a brother of our fellow citizen A.J. Goswick. Tom Goswick was a son of the late S.D. Goswick and was born at Plainville, Ga. December 28, 1874. The family moved to Texas and located at Mt. Vernon in 1895 and made his home here for several years. He married Miss Minnie Sisk of Rome, Ga. and one son was born to them – Marcus Goswick who now resides at Galveston. Tom’s health had been very bad for number of years and his death was not unexpected. The funeral services were held by Bro. T.H. Morris of the Methodist Church. [contributed by Bob Westphal]

we are indeed sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. Gene Goswick, which occurred at her home in Plainville, Ga. She lived at this place two years and made many friends who will be grieved to hear of her death. [contributed by Bob Westphal]

Oak Grove
Our community was saddened by the death of Mr. A. M. [Buster] Hamiltion, Sr., on Dec. 27. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and his place in our community and church can never be filled. Funeral services were held from Oak Grove church Dec. 29, with Rev. A. B. Cash and Rev. R. C. Kimsey officiating, and burial was in the family lot at Oothcaloga. He is survived by his wife, nine children, four sisters, three brothers and two grand children, besides other relatives and a host of friends who feel they have lost a great friend and neighbor.

Miss Bail Hall, Civic Leader, Dies Friday
Miss Bail Hall, 79 prominent Calhoun religious and civic leader, died in the Gordon County Hospital Friday morning at 9:20 a.m. The dau. of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Hall, pioneer Gordon County settlers, Miss Hall was born and reared here. She began teaching in the Calhoun Public Schools in 1899 and retired teacher was very active in services. One of the oldest members of the First Baptist Church, the retired teacher was very active in all church affairs. She was prominent in civic and club activities, having been a charter member and a past president of the Calhoun Woman's Club. The sister of the late G. A. Hall, Miss Hall is the last of 13 children. She is survived by two sister-in-law, Mrs. J. S. Hall of Chattanooga, and Mrs. J. A. Hall of San Carlos, Calif; and 23 nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church Sun. at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Solon C. Couch officiating. Mrs. Allen Roff was in charge of the music and burial was in Fain Cemetery. Active pallbearers included Henry Grady Lay Jr., Milton Earnest, Paul Lay, Kontz Lay, Baxter Lay, Harry Lay, Bob Cooper and Winfred Nixon. Honorary pallbearers were A. R. McDaniel, James Star, O. C. Langford, Floyd Johnson, Bill Moss, Jule Fain, R. L. Collins, J. O. B. Erwin, Dr. Charles Richards, J. C. Overton and Jim Reeve.

Judge Basil Hamilton, the Kalamazoo Christian, has just died at the advanced age of 103 years, preserving his faunltes clear to the last. He was of a family of twenty three children. Six of his elder brothers fought the british under the leadership of Washington. The old gentleman himself had known the Father of his Country, had voted for his second term, and had voted for every President ever since. He was married at 19, in the year 1790, eloping with a girl of 16, with whom he lived until the year 1857. They were man and wife for sixty seven years. During these years of uninterrupted happiness they had seventeen children, of whom eight are still living. There are also eighty one grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren. As nearly as can be estimated the fruit of the clandestine union of Basil Hamilton and Martha Stillwell was 220 souls. Born March 15, 1771, he was older than the republic. Washington was farming at Mount Vernon; Jefferson was 28 years of age; George III was on the English throne; Nelson was a midshipman; The future Duke of Willington was a baby in arms; Robert Burns was a school boy; Walter and Scott Murst were not born; Mary Antonia, at 16, was barely foreshadowing that exquisite beauty which was one of the agents preparing for the overthrow of the old regime; Napoleon was in infant, and Infayette was studying in Paris.

The infant of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hall, was laid to rest in the Franklin cemetery Fri., Jan. 1, 1937. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. H. Bridges.

Prominent Gordon Woman is Dead
Mrs. B. F. Hall, a prominent Gordon County woman, died at her home near Calhoun on Wed. night of last week at the age of 63. She is survived by her husband and three sons, B. H. Hall, J. M. Hall, and H. R. Hall and seven daughters, Mrs. Lee Fox and Mrs. C. W. Robinson, of near Calhoun, Mrs. Carter White of Whitfield county, Mrs. George Price, of Adairsville; Mrs. Marvin Stewart, of Calhoun; and Miss Ira Hall, of Calhoun, besides several brothers and sisters and a great number of friends and relatives. Funeral services were held from Harmony church Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. A. J. McArthur officiating, and interment followed in Harmony cemetery.

MRS. MARTHA HUDGINS
CALHOUN, Ga., Dec. 8. - Mrs. Martha Hudgins, the oldest citizen of Calhoun, died at her home here Sunday. Before her marriage she was Miss Martha Gray, born and was raised here. She was buried Monday afternoon at Fain cemetery beside her husband who preceded her many years ago. She is survived by three children, Mrs. May Skelly, of Calhoun; Mrs. Bessie Crawford, of Chattanooga. and Mrs. Dell Redfern, of Charlotte. N. C.; several grand and great-grandchildren.
